How to Design a 30-Minute Technical Phone Screen That Produces Real Signal
What a 30-minute screen is for
A 30-minute technical phone screen exists for one reason: to decide whether the next 4–6 hours of onsite or virtual loop time are worth spending on this candidate. That's the entire job. It is not a mini-onsite. It is not a culture chat with some code at the end. It is a gate.
That framing is liberating. You don't need to assess everything. You need to assess the one or two things that, if they fail, the rest of the loop is wasted on.
The 30-minute budget
A working budget that survives contact with reality:
- 2 minutes — quick intros, candidate's current role.
- 3 minutes — explain the format, set expectations, confirm tooling works (mic, code editor, screen share).
- 20 minutes — one technical problem, end to end.
- 3 minutes — candidate questions.
- 2 minutes — wrap, next-step framing.
The 20-minute technical block is the only piece that matters. Everything else is overhead you can't compress further without being rude.
Pick the right problem
A 30-minute problem is not a Leetcode hard. It is also not Fizzbuzz. The right shape is:
- Solvable end-to-end in 15 minutes by a strong candidate, leaving 5 minutes for follow-ups.
- Has an obvious naive solution, so a weak candidate can produce something and isn't frozen.
- Has an obvious next-level optimisation, so a strong candidate has somewhere to go after the naive pass.
- Doesn't require recall. No "implement a B-tree". You're testing thinking, not memorisation.
Examples that work: "given a list of meetings, find conflicts", "implement an LRU cache against a given interface", "given a CSV-like blob, group rows by a key". They're all simple enough that the naive solution fits in a screen of code, and rich enough that there's a real follow-up question.
Examples that don't work in 30 minutes: anything graph-algorithm-shaped, anything requiring scaffolding, anything where the candidate spends 10 minutes understanding the prompt.
What you're actually scoring
For a phone screen, three axes — not five. Anything more is theatre at this time budget.
- Reads the problem before coding. Does the candidate ask one clarifying question, restate the problem, and propose an approach before they start typing? Or do they hammer at the keyboard while you watch?
- Writes code that works. Not perfect code. Not idiomatic code. Working code, with the candidate noticing edge cases as they go.
- Can talk while typing. Silent coding for 15 minutes is a no-hire signal regardless of whether the code works, because every later round needs them to think out loud.
That's it. If the candidate hits all three at a 3-or-better, you advance. The structured rubric for the full loop does the heavier lifting later.
What to cut
- System design at the phone screen. Save it for the onsite. You can't get a meaningful signal in 8 minutes.
- Behavioural questions beyond "tell me about your current role". Save those for the dedicated round.
- "Tell me about a project." It's a great question. It is not a 30-minute-screen question.
- Take-home referenced in the screen. If you have a take-home, it goes before or after — not folded into the screen.
Run the screen on the tooling the real loop uses
A 30-minute screen on Google Docs followed by a 90-minute onsite on a real editor is a candidate-experience disaster.
